APEC Officials Gather in Hanoi to Discuss Business Continuity Planning

Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) officials gathered in Vietnam's capital Hanoi at two seminars to discuss measures for business continuity planning (BCP) despite the potential impacts of natural disasters, local media reported on Friday.

The events, co-organized from May 8-10 by Vietnam and Australia in the framework of an initiative to help businesses resume operations and production after natural disasters, were approved by APEC's Emergency Preparedness Working Group (EPWG) in 2012.

Participants discussed the roles of state agencies in fostering and creating conditions for implementing BCP, and shared expertise in policy building and planning for BCP in several economies.

They also brought forth important recommendations to enhance cooperation and improve emergency preparedness, and discussed measures to foster collaboration within APEC and between the grouping and international organizations in the field, reported state-run Vietnam News Agency.

The Asia-Pacific region regularly experiences the consequences of extreme natural disasters, which cause huge economic damage and have an effect on businesses in the region.

Therefore, one of APEC members' concerns is to increase businesses' awareness of the importance of mapping out recovery plans to help resume operations after a disaster, as well as share practical experiences and policies to boost BCP among businesses.

As a co-chair of EPWG during 2012-2013 periods, Vietnam is working closely with APEC's member countries and regional organizations to implement the Group's initiative.
