Experts Believe North Korea Nuclear Test Threat Real

Academic experts in South Korea say they expect the North to carry through with a plan to carry out a new nuclear test.

Kim Jong-un has met with his top security officials and told them of the need for "substantial and high-profile measures" in responding to a new UN resolution.

The UN expanded sanctions against North Korean companies and individuals after a rocket launch last month.

It was seen by the west as a disguised missile test.

Brian Myers, associate professor of International Studies at Dongseo University in Busan, South Korea, has told Radio Australia's Connect Asia the threat of another nuclear test from the North is serious.

"It can be meaningless if it is confined to North Korea's English language news releases, as is often the case. This stuff we are hearing right now is being put out by the domestic media as well, which means it isn't bluster. The government in Pyongyang is very likely to carry through on this threat of a nuclear test," Prof Myers said.

Prof Myers says it appears the North will use highly enriched uranium if a third nuclear test does happen.

"Two tests in 2006 and 2009 were using plutonium and they didn't really do very well. They kind of fizzled out, which didn't prevent the North Korean government from touting them at home as big triumphs, but I think this time, and the general consensus among nuclear experts, is that the North Koreans are going to try to use highly enriched uranium," he said.

"One of the goals could be to miniaturise... to test the miniaturisation of a nuclear bomb in order to make sure that it could indeed be transported to a target far away and North Korea says the yield could be much greater than either of Pyongyang's previous tests."
