Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched a new website, mygov.nic.in, for citizens to share their ideas with the government and take part in projects.

The site is a “blend of technology and people power for India’s growth,” Modi wrote on Twitter this weekend as he launched the site.

Citizens register to join the site, and can then take part in online forums and volunteer their time to participate in public sector projects. The tasks that volunteers complete will be reviewed by and shared with the community on the website.

For instance, a task posted on the website invites people to submit designs and a concept plan for a mobile application for the Prime Minister’s website, pmindia.gov.in. The winning design will be awarded a cash prize.

Another task invites people to identify the top 10 initiatives that the central and state governments should take up to realise the Prime Minister’s vision of a digital India. “There has been a flood of suggestions in response to the Prime Minister’s vision for a digital India. It is important to prioritise the ideas and come up with a practical roadmap of what can be taken up first with maximum benefit to the nation,” the post said.
The site doesn’t just relate to digital initiatives. The registration process asks users to set out all of the skills that they have which could be useful in public sector projects, including poetry, design and communications skills.

The website has a ‘Creative Corner’ where citizens can share creative ideas with government departments like creating a draft banner/logo or suggesting a punchline for a government project.

One project asks participants to “share a media album capturing the various shades of any one wildlife park, natural reserve, etc. This task is for those interested in photography. You are required to spend time at any wildlife park, natural reserve and share photo album/videos that capture some aspects about that park.”

Along with sharing photos, it also asks them to suggest how the infrastructure in the area can be improved, particularly to prevent further environmental degradation.

The site also sets out a future project for cleaning the Ganga river - tasks invite citizens to share global best practices on cleaning big rivers, and create a plan to clean and redevelop Varanasi city on the banks of the river.
Modi tweeted: “I have seen people wanting to devote their time & energy to nation building. All they need is an opportunity. ‘MyGov’ is that opportunity!”

The Prime Minister also committed to expand the remit of the website. “We want to expand the nature & scope of ‘MyGov’ in the days to come. We also seek your feedback, suggestions & ideas for ‘MyGov’.”
