The State Government of Queensland is funding the development of a smartphone application to encourage residents to stop littering.
A government grant of AU$50,000 is being awarded to Keep Queensland Beautiful, a community-based, environmental organisation motivating people to enhance the quality of their local environment. The organisation will be developing this app.
The funding for the “litter-busting” app was announced by Andrew Powell, Environment Minister. He said that since people today are using mobile technology extensively for a variety of functions, the app will encourage them to prevent littering.
“The litter-prevention app will provide an easy-to-use mechanism for people to pledge to pick up litter, report on their actions and share with their friends”, said Powell.
“We know the majority of people do the right thing when getting rid of their rubbish but unfortunately some continue to litter our beaches, our parks and our public spaces”, he continue. “I’m confident this new app will encourage people to take action to reduce litter and make a real difference to our environment.”
