Thai University Pilots Virtual Classrooms with Cloud

Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Chulanlongkorn University (CU) in Thailand has piloted a project using Microsoft Office 365 hosted on the cloud to increase efficiency in teaching and learning in the classroom, and create a virtual classrooms connecting lecturers to students regardless the distance.

Assoc Prof Dr Pintip Pongpech, Dean of Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, CU said during the announcement of the project on January 26, that MS Office 365 will enhance the opportunity among students and lecturers to communicate and be closer to each other as well as to enable students to be in touch with teachers from well-known universities around the world via the virtual classrooms.

The pilot implementation of MS Office 365 and its virtual classrooms will be a part of the international course in Social and Administrative Pharmacy. The Faculty is the first in the country to adopt such technology from Microsoft.

"The Faculty realised the benefit of ICT in education and decided to adopt this technology to help reduce obstacles in attending the classrooms, as well as to enable the Faculty to invite qualified lecturers from other universities to conduct the class via the new system," she said.

She added that the new solution will help reduce the cost of the course.

After the pilot trial in Social and Administrative Pharmacy International Course, the Faculty planned to adopt MS Office 365 into the other two postgraduate courses, according to Pongpech.

Asst Prof Dr Anuchai Teeraroungchaisri, Assistant to the Dean, who is in charge of the Faculty’s education IT development said that the Social and Administrative Pharmacy International Course has began the virtual classrooms in November 2012 using Microsoft Link—one of the solution in MS Office 365.

As the result, teachers and students were able to communicate seamlessly due to stable audio and video transmission. This helped enhance the ability in learning and teaching and the students were able to understand the content better, Teeraroungchaisri added.
