MRC / info4africa KZN Community Forum: The Department of Health’s Approach to Nutrition Matters (Conferences)
Start Date: Mar 25, 2014
End Date: Mar 25, 2014
Venue: Seminar Room, Medical Research Council, 491 Peter Mokaba Road (Old Ridge Road), Overport, Durban
Description: info4africa (formerly known as The Centre for HIV/AIDS Networking and the HIV-911 Programme) is a self-funded Centre of the School of Applied Human Sciences, College of Humanities, University of KwaZulu-Natal.

Info4africa is hosting a forum on the topic ‘The Department of Health’s Approach to Nutrition Matters’ on 25 March 2014 in Durban.

Speaker: Zamazulu Mtshali - Deputy Manager for the Integrated Nutrition Programme (INP), KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health

Mtshali's presentation will highlight studies that show the presence of nutritional transition in KwaZulu-Natal, where both under and over-nutrition are prevalent. Within the context of the HIV and AIDS pandemic and food insecurity, the high prevalence of under-nutrition, micronutrient deficiencies and emergent over-nutrition presents a complex series of challenges.

Over the years, significant gains have been made with regards to scaling up nutrition, with the development of policies and guidelines for the implementation of nutrition strategies. There is now a renewed focus on specific priority groups for nutrition interventions to have a bigger impact. This focus on nutrition contributes to bigger health sector priorities which include:
• Increasing life expectancy;
• Decreasing infant and maternal mortality;
• Combating HIV and AIDS and decreasing the burden of disease from TB; and
• Improving health care programme effectiveness.
The Department of Health also recognises the multisectoral nature of nutrition challenges and the role that can be played by both public and private stakeholders in supporting nutrition-related initiatives.
