Start Date: May 24, 2013
End Date: May 24, 2013

Description: Healthy happy citizens make for a successful and peaceful City and Nation. It is for this reason that the South Durban Development Network in partnership with the South Durban Basin Area Based Management and EThekwini Health Department, will be hosting Health and Wellness Open Days, on the following dates.

The Health and Wellness Open Days are aimed at highlighting and creating awareness around health issues and wellness promotion to underprivileged communities of the South Durban Basin. It is about taking Health Care to the people.

The “My Health my Life” Open Days will provide access to free testing for blood sugar, blood pressure, HIV testing and counselling, Cancer screenings, as well as will focus on Environmental health, Social issues such as substance abuse, teenage pregnancy, access to grants, ID documents and eye screening. In addition, the Health and Wellness Day will bring on board sports and fitness experts, nutritionists, and alternate health remedy practitioners to showcase what they have on offer.

The South Basin Communities including school children will be urged to attend and to access the opportunities and information available on the day. A special information sharing programme will be arranged for learners.

Sister Cindy Ngobese of Austerville Clinic and Chairperson of the Health and Wellness Steering committee (the organisers of the event) said: “it is programmes like these that make a meaningful impact on peoples’ health, as it is proactive and preventative. When people come to the clinic it is only to deal with symptoms and the causes of problem like high blood pressure and diabetes are ignored because of the large numbers of people that nurses have to attend to in the clinics. “

Ms Eurakha Singh SDB ABM Manager said:”We urge our communities to come out in their numbers to get tested, get advice and take control over their health because ‘your health and your life’ are in your hands.”
