A total of 18 learners from the Greater Mapungubwe Transfrontier Conservation Area (GMTCA) were hosted at the Mapungubwe National Park in Limpopo for the 3rd Tri-Nations Children in the Wilderness camp which took place from 11-15 December.
These learners are provided with opportunities to learn, meet, socialize and expand their knowledge of environmental issues relating to their curriculum.
The camp is funded by the proceeds from the tour de Tuli event, an annual cycling event hosted in the GMTCA. It is hosted at Mapungubwe National Park in December of each year and is hosted by Children in Wilderness (Non-Profit Organisation) in partnership with the Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) and Peace Parks Foundation (PPF).
Amongst the many activities they engaged on, learners got the opportunity to visit the world class Mapungubwe Interpretation Centre where the golden rhino and other artefacts discovered on Mapungubwe hill are housed.
“A visit to the confluence was such a delight as these young learners got to see where their respective countries and the rivers Limpopo and Shashe meet,” said Maremba.
Participants in the camp are selected from their different Eco-clubs, which are designed to offer all learners who are interested in the environment a chance to meet and learn from each other.
Depending on the area, these clubs meet weekly or monthly in order to help learners expand their knowledge of the environment.
The selection programme rotates annually from school to school and is based on how well the learners contributed in their different clubs.
