Kelly Brownell, a Vodacom Change the World programme volunteer at Tomorrow Trust who is in charge of the computer literacy programme, explains why she believes in this organisation, “We will be using a South African software programme called Big Boet. The software will address all our academic needs, such as reading, comprehension and numeracy through fun and interactive games. By using this computer software, children will gain skills which they will need for their tertiary studies as well as their careers. The software also has a monitoring and evaluation function that allows us to track each child’s progress and highlights any areas of difficulty that we need to address.”
“The success of the organisation can be seen in our 2012 learners’ results. We had 100% pass rate amongst our matrics, with one even receiving eight distinctions. We had a 98% pass rate with our tertiary students and our 32 graduates range from medical doctors, accountants and numerous BSc degrees. This shows that the programmes are truly working and give our youth belief in themselves, hope for the future and the necessary skills to contribute to the economy”, says Kelly.
Tomorrow Trust’s direct involvement in the children’s lives allows them to shape some of SA’s most vulnerable and potentially gifted young people. With the addition of the computer literacy programme, they have an even greater opportunity to develop them into well-rounded individuals who are equipped for a better future.
