Malawi government will launch the Malawi Public Service Charter and the Code of
Conduct and Ethics for the country’s public service on Sunday at Civo stadium in
Lilongwe.
The launch will be part of the commemoration of the Africa Public Service Day
which was declared by the African Union (AU) to celebrate and recognize the
value and virtue of public services to communities.
On this day, African continent celebrates and honours the work of the many women
and men who devote their lives to diligently serve the people of Africa.
The event will be presided over by Vice President Khumbo Kachali, but President
Joyce Banda will make a statement on Saturday, June 22, 2013.
Malawi will this year join the rest of African countries in commemorating the
day under the theme ‘Enhancing an Ethical and Productive Public Service’.
Activities at the main event to commemorate the day, according to Hawa Ndilowe,
Chief Secretary to the Government and Head of the Public Service, will include
exhibitions from different ministries, department and agencies of government,
press conferences beginning from June 24 to June 29 by principal secretaries and
other government officials and phone-in programmes where principal secretaries
will take questions, queries and commendations from the general public.
The activities will also be replicated at district and local levels in all the
28 districts in the country at designated dates within the year.
Specifically, the objectives of the African Public Service Day are to bring
public servants together to commemorate the value and virtue of service delivery
improvement to communities they serve, consider the working conditions of men
and women who devote their lives to serve the public, encourage positive
interest by citizens in the work of public administration, reward good
initiatives by public servants and promote professionalism in the delivery of
public services, according to Ndilowe.
