Geneva — An Angolan delegation led by Science and Technology minister, Maria Cândida Teixeira is attending the 17th Session of the Commission on Science and Technology for Development of the UN Conference on Trade and Development ( UNCTAD ) opened Monday in Geneva, Switzerland.

The work agenda reserves for the first day a roundtable on the progress made in the implementation and monitoring of the outcomes of the World Summit on the Information Society at the regional and international level.

According to a report of 2014 released by the UN Secretary General, Ban Ki Moon, the African continent still has considerable gaps in Internet access, despite recording a trend of significant growth in the sector in recent years in some African countries.

The document points out an estimated 63% of global mobile penetration rate and a 16 % access to Internet from 2013 in Africa.

The level of expansion of mobile broadband has risen from 2 % in 2010 to 11% in 2013.

The source added that the Internet represents 1.1 % of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in Africa and can rise from the current USD 18 billion to 300 billion in 2025.

Despite these gains, sub-Saharan Africa still has the lowest rate of Internet penetration, emphasises the source.

The United Nations Economic Commission For Africa (ECA) continues to support Member States in the implementation of the Tunis Agenda for the Information Society.

The report also stresses that ECA works closely with the African Union Commission and the Regional Economic Communities of Africa on Development of an African Convention on cyber security, harmonisation of legislation on cyber-security and governance indicators.

The work agenda of the session will go until Friday and is expected to cover themes such as "Science, Technology and Innovation for Development agenda post 2015", "Information and Communication Technologies for Social and Inclusive Economic Development".

The session will also submit and discuss reports on science, technology and innovation, and the election of the chairperson and other officials for the 18th Session of the Commission
