The Commonwealth Women Parliamentary (CWP) Association was formed to discuss ways to increase female representation in Parliament and work towards the mainstreaming of gender considerations in all CPA activities and programmes.
The theme for the CWP Africa Region Conference is, “Are African Parliaments on Target Towards Attaining the 2015 Millennium Development Goals?” The Conference was held at the East London International Convention Centre (ICC), February 9 – 13, 2013.
Parliament of Uganda Speaker, Hon. Kadaga, is the outgoing Chairperson of the Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians (Africa Region), having been elected in 2009.
She called upon women in the Commonwealth to have vision of change and visibility to help society.
Hon. Kadaga said that in order for all Commonwealth countries to have a remarkable representation of women in parliaments, there is need for a concerted effort to engage countries that are below the 30% women representation and are due to go for general elections.
The Deputy Speaker of the South African National Assembly praised Hon. Kadaga for standing up to protect the constitutional mandate of the Commonwealth Constitution (Africa Region) with the main objective of championing emancipation of women , respect for human rights and freedom, and the pursuit of democracy and good governance.
The Speaker informed the delegates that Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians have pursued these goals by engaging political leaders in Africa Commonwealth countries to infuse these goals into all levels of their political work.
While outlining the Strides and Challenges faced by African countries in implementing MDGs, Noxolo Kiviet, the Premier of Eastern Cape Province said there is a significant improvement in child mortality in the world and Africa as per a United Nations Report released in 2012.
