The Minister of Posts and Telecommunications, Hon. Dr. Frederick Norkeh, has disclosed that the Republic of Liberia has now accessed the fiber optic for commercial use. He noted that 'connecting our country to fiber optic cable serves as a platform for international connectivity and backbone for national connectivity. He said this had been our desire for the past seven years.' According to minister Norkeh, Liberia will enormously benefit from this kind of technology, adding that the international connectivity technology (ICT) as the engine of economic growth and social development needs a reliable platform. "Access to fiber cable can facilitate such a progress. Today we are pleased that following some frantic efforts we are connected to this broadband network," he said. It can be recalled that in anticipation of this day, the Ministry of osts and Telecommunications in 2009 formulated and issued the p[olicy framework that provided direction to connect Liberia to the ACE fiber cable, an instrument that became the roadmap that addressed how Liberia would connect to broadband connectivity. The Telecommunications minister also indicated that while access to fiber will address poor internet connectivity and significantly reduce cost, "we encourage all users to innovatively use the technology to open new opportunities for our society," he said. He added that "we rely on the private sector to lead such innovations knowing that they play a central role in job creation". The Posts and Telecommunications boss used the opportunity to commend all actors in the sector that have worked to make the day a reality, including the government through the ministry of Finance for playing a very strategic role in mobilizing funds that enhanced Liberia's connection to the fiber cable. Minister Norkeh also commended other stakeholders such as the Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA), the Cellcom, LoneStar, Libtelco, who did tremendous jobs as their efforts led to the establishment of the cable Consortium of Liberia, a need-based public- -private partnership that is managing the investment. He concluded: "with the cable accessible, we need to further collaborate to ensure that all parts of Liberia are connected; and that the lives of our people are transformed by this great technology".
