Public Policy Dialogues on an AIDS Free Generation
Start Date: Apr 02, 2014
End Date: Apr 03, 2014
Venue: Airport Grand Hotel, Johannesburg
Description: SAfAIDS is a regional nonprofit organisation based in Harare, (Zimbabwe), with country offices in Pretoria (South Africa), Lusaka (Zambia) and Manzini (Swaziland). SAfAIDS mission is to be a centre of excellence that promotes effective and ethical development responses to Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights, HIV (including PMTCT) and TB through advocacy, communication and social mobilisation. SAfAIDS vision is to ensure that all people in Africa realise their sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) and are free from the burden of HIV, TB and other related developmental health issues.
SAfAIDS is hosting a multi-stakeholder Regional Policy Dialogue under the theme 'Realising Sexual Reproductive and Health Rights Among Key Populations' from 2-3 April 2014 in Johannesburg.

The dialogue will have representatives of the African Union, SADC, Key populations, National AIDS Councils, relevant Ministries and Donor organisations. They are working towards reducing new HIV infections and preventing AIDS-related deaths among key populations’.

The dialogue will consists of keynote speeches from the South African Ministry of health, panel discussions and a staged talk show to allow for open dialogue among the 60 invited leaders. For those not attending the dialogue an opportunity to partake in the proceedings will be availed through social media, namely twitter and facebook as live updates will be streamed and in the process also allowing their feedback and views to be shared with delegates attending the dialogue.

A majority of African countries are experiencing an increase in the contracting and transmission of HIV due to the vulnerability of key populations. The National AIDS Strategic plans of most countries confirms the need to prioritise key populations such as LGBTI persons, sex workers, Men having sex with Men, Persons living with disabilities and Transgender Individuals; yet there are limited practical interventions to reduce this vulnerability. Access to SRHR services by key populations remains a major challenge in Africa. The two day policy dialogue will therefore explore policy options for strengthening Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights for key populations in the region. It will draw up practical recommendations for policies on how to integrate SRHR for key populations in the post 2015 development agenda.
