Gauteng Provincial Government’s Second Annual ICT Summit - Mobility Technology on the Move
Start Date: Oct 03, 2013
End Date: Oct 03, 2013
Venue: Gauteng
Description: If there’s one word to describe 2012, “mobility” is it. And as we approach the tail-end of 2013, it has become one of the strongest trends of the past year, with smartphones, tablets and other mobile electronic devices taking the information and communication sphere by storm. Today, it is rare to come across someone who does not carry a multipurpose electronic device.

We have gone from internet cafés to the web in our pockets with the advent of smart technology. Business professionals can communicate with each other remotely from anywhere in the world, while cell phone applications have made the world a smaller place.

Most of the population is moving away from computers because these devices are slowly replacing them. Smartphones are no longer for only those who can afford. They have truly made our lives easier. Today you are able to pay bills, make money transfers, book flight tickets, and check your heart rate using just your cell phone.

The widespread adoption of smartphones and tablets continued this past year, completely dominating personal life and gradually making their way into the workplace. Smart device shipments broke records in the second half of 2012 by reaching 303.6 million and grew to 362 million in the holiday quarter. This statistic, coupled with the fact that smartphone users worldwide have already downloaded more than 45 billion apps this year – almost twice as many as last year – makes for a truly exploding market.

Not to be left behind, Gauteng is ensuring that each one of its employees and citizens optimizes the part they play in service delivery by keeping up with global trends.

Through the use of this device, government workers who spend most of their time on the field working, have a mobile office to keep in touch with the happenings in the office. Likewise, citizens can access any government service with just a click of a button on their smartphones.

On Thursday 3 October 2013 the Gauteng Department of Finance will be hosting Gauteng Provincial Government’s second annual ICT Summit, a discussion on how best can the province use the infrastructure that has already been put in place and the envisaged broadband to initiate the mobility strategy.
