South America is living through one of its best times despite the global financial crisis, Peruvian Foreign Minister Rafael Roncagliolo said Thursday in Lima.
"South America is experiencing its best moment," Roncagliolo told a meeting of foreign ministers from the Union of South American Nations (Unasur), which groups Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Chile, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay and Venezuela. Paraguay's membership is currently suspended.
The minister said the Unasur member states were united around a common goal of development during the international crisis, highlighting the need to let go of age-old differences between countries.
The foreign ministers, who met to make preparations for the Unasur summit slated on Friday, would review a report on the status of Paraguay, which was suspended from the trade bloc following the congressional ouster of its former president Fernando Lugo last June.
They would also discuss proposals on several issues, including trade, integration, poverty reduction, security, defense, and at least 30 regional projects valued at about 13 billion US dollars.
