UK Govt Announces New Scheme to Boost AI Talent

The UK Government has announced a major new initiative, backed by leading businesses, to boost the country's data capability with a new artificial intelligence (AI) talent scheme. It also confirmed the appointment of the chair of the data ethics and innovation centre.

This new industry and government collaboration to develop the next generation of AI experts in the UK is backed by businesses including Amazon, Rolls Royce, Ocado and McKinsey & Quantum Black. This new industrial masters programme for AI will see the British Computer Society and Alan Turing Institute partner with major corporations and universities to boost the number of AI experts in the UK. Work to develop the scheme will commence in July, with the hope of launching it in 2019. 

The new Centre of Data Ethics and Innovation will be chaired by Roger Taylor. The Centre is central to the Government's Digital Charter and will the promote the safe, ethical and innovative use of data. The Government has published a consultation on the Centre's role, objectives and activities. 

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister has asked the Digital Secretary Matt Hancock to produce a new National Data Strategy to unlock the power of data in the UK economy and government. This will build on the UK Digital Strategy, Digital Charter, Industrial Strategy and Grand Challenges. Separately, the Department of Digital, Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS) will provide new GBP 350,000 funding to the Digital Catapult to help Internet of Things (IoT) innovators and emerging technology sector.
