Dutch Secretary of State Raymond Knops, at the Ministry of Home Affairs and Kingdom Relations (BZK), wants to ask the Dutch association of municipalities VNG why municipalities why they have put insufficient attention into making their websites accessible for people with disabilities. Knops put this in a letter to Parliament, answering questions from GroenLinks MP Nevin Ozutok.

The Member of Parliament wanted to know last March why municipalities are so slow in making their websites accessible to people with visual or hearing disabilities, for example. There is a bit over a year to go before governments such as municipalities have to comply with new European requirements in this area.

A third of municipalities are doing well
Only one third of the municipalities are currently “doing a good job, with meeting requirements,” according to experts. As of September 2019, failure to comply with the European legislation could result in sanctions, which means that many municipalities will have to work hard.
