The government has launched plans to save £1.4bn from ICT spending and drive forward the internet as a means to deliver public services in the future.
The ICT Strategy Strategic Implementation Plan is expected to make savings over the next four years, helping to government to push forward its "digital by default" public services policy, improving the efficiency and quality of government departments' ICT and creating a more open and competitive marketplace.
Key milestones in the plan will see 50 per cent of central government departments' new ICT spending moved to public cloud computing services by the end of 2015, with a could computing strategy due to be published in October this year.
The plan will see developments in the Public Services Network (PSN) with 80 per cent of government telecommunications PSN compliant by March 2014. And it has set development targets for the government application store as well as the use of agile techniques in major ICT-enabled programmes.
"Government ICT drives the delivery of public services, from government web services for the submission of tax returns to enabling our armed forces to operate in Afghanistan," said Cabinet Office minister Francis Maude.
"This government is committed to delivering a better service to the taxpayer on government ICT projects.
"In August we announced that we had already saved the public purse £300m by applying greater scrutiny to our ICT expenditure. And now we are going even further and save even more money, while delivering higher standards for government ICT."
