UK: 100,000 Jobs to be Cut over Christmas

The coalition’s cuts will force local authorities, police forces and other public bodies to cut 100,000 posts by early next year, it was claimed.

Councils must have their austerity budgets in place by March 31 but are required to give 90 days’ notice of job cuts, meaning posts to be cut in April must be announced before New Year’s Day.

Some 140 councils have not yet disclosed their full austerity measures, meaning the news could be broken to workers over the Christmas holidays, it was reported.

Deep cuts to council budgets announced this week and the approaching end of the financial year are likely to result in thousands of workers receiving letters warning them their jobs are under threat.

Brendan Barber, general secretary of the Trades Union Congress, told The Guardian: “Thousands of local government workers face having their Christmas ruined by redundancy notices.”

Some councils are understood to be factoring current salaries into next year’s budgets to prevent the need to fire staff at Christmas.

A further 33,000 public sector jobs were axed between August and October, according to unemployment figures released yesterday.

This caused unemployment to rise by 35,000, reaching a total of more than 2.5 million – the highest rate since January.

The government expects 330,000 public sector jobs to be axed over the coming four years, but hopes this will be offset by growth of private businesses.
