The Australian government has announced the creation of a military cyber division designed to fight overseas criminal networks and thwart attacks against the country. The new unit will be called the information warfare division and will allow Australia to use offensive cyber capabilities to "disrupt, degrade, deny, and deter" offshore cyber criminals and foreign enemies including Islamic State. "This is a result of the changing character of contemporary conflict," said Dan Tehan, the minister assisting prime minister Malcolm Turnbull on cyber security, according to Reuters.
The new unit will also be responsible for defending Australia's armed forces against cyber attacks, said Tehan, while the country’s defence force added that cyber attacks are being used to supplement air strikes and other warfare activities that are part of Australia's role in the US-led coalition battling Islamic State.
