Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said Tuesday that his country will contribute $3 billion by 2018 to support women in developing countries.

During the third World Assembly for Women conference in Tokyo from Tuesday, Abe outlined the plan to promote respect for women’s rights and the realization of women’s abilities in the developing world.

Tokyo Gov. Yuriko Koike also attended the meeting.

Abe said women should exhibit more leadership in politics, adding that Koike and Myanmar’s de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi “have broken through the glass ceiling in the political world.”

The World Assembly for Women conference has been held annually since 2014, when it was launched as part of Japan’s efforts to create “a society where all women shine,” a key policy goal of Abe.
