IT is wrong to send children to sell to earn money during this holiday season, says Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation, Mereseini Vuniwaqa.

She made this comment after an International Labour Organisation report revealed that this was the period that parents usually sent their children to sell on the streets as a form of child labour.

Ms Vuniwaqa said parents should not do this because it was against the laws pertaining to employment of children.

"There are laws relating to employment in Fiji and the age restrictions. Parents have a responsibility to look after their children and not the other way around," Mrs Vuniwaqa said.

"For children, we look at interests of children and when those kinds of reports come to us we go out."

She said they were closely working with police to monitor issues relating to children.
