The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a $500,000 technical assistance grant to support the flagship fellowship program of the non-governmental organization Teach for the Philippines (TFP), under which 120 young Filipinos will be recruited as teaching fellows and trained in modern IT-based teaching methods.

“We know how important good teaching is to improving educational outcomes,” said ADB Principal Education Specialist Norman LaRocque. “This grant will support a program that will provide valuable lessons on innovations in teacher recruitment and training,”

The grant will strengthen Teach for the Philippines’ Summer Institute, where teaching fellows are trained in modern teaching techniques, including ways in which innovative technologies can support classroom teaching. The 120 new fellows will teach in selected public schools for two years.

The grant will also support the rollout of an interactive online system to support the professional development needs of teaching fellows, providing them with a tablet computer or smartphone for the duration of their program stint.

Teach for the Philippines is a member of the 35-partner Teach for All country network with partner programs such as Teach for America and Teach First in the United Kingdom.

The grant is financed by the Republic of Korea e-Asia and Knowledge Partnership Fund. The fellowship program is being implemented in high-density urban areas identified by TFP and the Department of Education, and will later expand to other areas.

Support for Teach for the Philippines will complement other government education initiatives, including the flagship K to 12 reform agenda, and is evidence of ADB’s continuing commitment to supporting education sector innovation in the Philippines.
