Parliament on Sunday passed the state budget for next year with several amendments.

The MVR17.95 billion budget signed off by the parliamentary budget review committee was passed with 27 of the 35 amendments proposed.

The budget was passed with 55 votes out of the 72 lawmakers present during Sunday’s sitting. Two MPs had voted against whilst 11 abstained.

Following the disparity amongst lawmakers over the budget for next year presented to the parliament floor on Wednesday, the parliamentary budget review committee has revised the budget with an additional MVR153 million.

With the change, the initially presented budget of MVR17.75 million has been raised to MVR17.95 billion.

The parliamentary budget review committee had earlier reversed its decision to increase the proposed budget of MVR17.5 billion to MVR18 billion.

But committee members only agreed to an MVR17.75 budget.

Former President Mohamed Waheed's government had earlier proposed a budget of MVR16.4 billion for 2014. But newly elected President Abdulla Yameen had said that the budget proposed by his predecessor needed to be significantly revised.

The new government had sent to the parliamentary budget review committee its amendments to the budget. The amendments had increased the proposed budget to MVR17.5 billion – the biggest ever budget by any government.
