Korea’s National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage (NRICH) will begin its first educational program on cultural asset preservation technology in the ancient city of Bagan, Myanmar, from December 21 to 28, announced the Cultural Heritage Administration (CHA).

This project, a first for the CHA, is an educational program designed to support science and technology in the protection of cultural properties.

Myanmar is one of the CHA’s target countries for official development assistance (ODA), and the CHA aims to boost cooperation with Myanmar in the future. Myanmar requested Korea provide on-site education about cultural asset preservation and related technology. The CHA provided the related equipment this September and followed up by planning this educational session.

The three-day on-site educational session will be offered to ten staff members from Myanmar’s Ministry of Culture who work directly with the management of Bagan cultural properties.

Korea’s educational team, composed of five experts from the NRICH, will offer lectures and provide hands-on field experience to their Myanmar counterparts. They will help teach how to preserve and handle cultural properties made of different materials, how to monitor the environment, how to protect cultural assets owned by museums, how to manage and preserve stone cultural properties and, finally, how to prevent the biological damage of cultural heritage items.

The CHA said that this project will also boost the educational effect back home, as it involves the use of cultural asset preservation related equipment provided by Korea. This program will also help introduce Korea’s advanced preservation technology to the world, the CHA added.
