Indonesian Anti-corruption Agency Urges Openness Through Use of Social Media

In a bid to eradicate corruption, Indonesia’s Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) urges government public relations officials to use social media to promote transparency and openness.

KPK’s Chairman Abraham Samad told public relations practitioners from 153 government ministries and agencies at a seminar last week that they play a critical role in combating corruption because they are the front line of every public institution.

Samad encouraged all public agencies to be open and transparent.

He added that the social media has opened up a variety of communication channels. The Indonesian government should take advantage of social media as an additional medium to engage the public.

Social media has transformed people’s lifestyles and the way they consume information. Indonesia has the fourth largest population of Facebook users in the world with approximately 48.8 million accounts.

As for Twitter, Jakarta alone accounted for 2.4 per cent of the 10.6 billion tweets posted globally from January to March this year.

Social media has become a critical part of the public relation function, said Samad.

He recognised that social media has its disadvantages. Inaccurate information can quickly spread and anonymity tend to spur negative and exaggerated opinions.

Public relations officials have to strategise in order to respond swiftly and appropriately.
