A Korean advanced simulation software website has received the HPC Innovation Excellence Award at the sixth International Supercomputing Conference (SC’13) in Denver, the United States, on November 20. The website,Education-research Integration through Simulation On the Net (EDISON) is the first Korean recipient of this prize.

The award is organized by International Data Corporation (IDC), a global market research and consulting firm, and sponsored by the U.S. Department of Defense, the Department of Energy, Intel, Hewlett Packard and Microsoft. It is designed to recognize noteworthy achievements by users of high performance computing technologies and is awarded twice a year.

The EDISON project has been carried by Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information (KISTI) since it was launched in July 2011. It allows researchers, students and small- and medium-sized enterprises to use supercomputer-based simulation software for free.

Upon registration at the website, anyone can conduct research or study using any one of the 98 pieces of simulation software. They cover computational fluid dynamics, computational chemistry, nanophysics and 124 engineering-related fields. The website can be used to design plane wings, simulate experiments in molecular dynamics or design nano-wafer-level semiconductor boards, among other things.

Between 2011 and 2013, the EDISON homepage has helped over 10,210 people from 93 universities perform 83,000 calculations for 193 engineering projects. The number of users increased over four–fold from the initial 1,919 users seen in the first year to 8,291 in the second year.

The Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning intends to add computational structural dynamics and computational design modeling capabilities to the website in 2014 and plans to upgrade the platform further by the end of 2016.
