KUALA LUMPUR: Pakatan Rakyat has proposed a 10% cut in operating costs of ministries while ending ineffective programmes as among the ways to achieve its fiscal reformation.

In unveiling their alternative budget yesterday, Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said it was aimed at strengthening the nation’s fiscal standing.

Anwar proposed the cut in operating costs of ministries by temporarily suspending the allowance increases for Cabinet ministers and heads of government departments.

“We also propose a review of the Federal Government’s expenditure policy, especially in giving contracts and the procurement of equipment,” said Anwar, who made the announcement in Parliament yesterday.

The alternative budget was agreed upon by all three Pakatan partners two days earlier.

It introduced a proposed fiscal reformation that is said to ensure deficit at 3% GDP by 2015 and a budget surplus by 2018.

DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng, who was also present, had proposed that the Government do away with programmes that were unimportant and ineffective, such as the National Service programme which cost RM800mil annually.

PAS’ Kamaruddin Jaafar also suggested that a parliamentary select committee call the shots on procuring equipment for national defence.
