Bangladesh: Bill Passed to Ensure Harsher Punishment for Food Adulteration

A bill, titled ‘Safe Food Bill, 2013’, seeking to ensure safe food in the country, was passed in Parliament on Monday keeping a provision of maximum five years imprisonment or Tk 10 lakh fine or both for adulteration of food. Food Minister Dr Abdur Razzaque moved the Bill in Parliament that was passed by voice vote. Under the proposed law, an institutional framework will be established to ensure food safety. Besides, a Food Safety Advisory Council, headed by the Food Minister, will be constituted and a safe food authority to be established, while there will be detailed lists of activities which are harmful to health. There will be arrangements of food testing as well. In the proposed Bill, there are detailed description of food adulteration and the punishment to deal with that. It also mentioned that if the any person commits the same kind of offence for second time the punishment would be double.
