Fiji's fourth constitution will for the first time have social economic rights, local press reported Sunday.

The new constitution will guarantee Fijians' right to work, right to minimum wage, housing, sanitation, right to economic participation and the right to transportation, Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum was quoted by state owned radio Fiji Broadcasting Corporation as saying.

He said ordinary people and workers will greatly benefit from the new section of the Constitution.

According to Khaiyum, the constitution is being given its final touches and is also being translated into the vernacular language. In order to ensure that all Fijians are able to fully understand the new constitution it will be published in all three major languages.

The attorney-general said carrying out the translation of the constitution into Fijian and Hindi was one of the final steps before Fiji's constitution would be ready.

"The government has completed most of its revisions to the draft constitution, after careful consideration of the numerous submissions made by the Fijian people," he told The Fiji Times newspaper in June.
