NAGPUR: The state government has decided to set up a public administration research institute in Vanamati premises on the lines of Administrative Staff College of India ( ASCI), Hyderabad. This is a part of birth centenary celebrations of late VasantraoNaik, former chief minister of Maharashtra.

Guardian minister Shivajirao Moghe told the media on Monday that as Vanamati - an acronym for Vasantrao Naik State Agricultural Extension Management Training Institute - was named after Naik, the new research centre sanctioned under the centenary celebration project was being set up here. "Moreover, Naik hailed from Vidarbha and so Nagpur is the appropriate location," he said.

Many more projects will be undertaken and activities will be taken up to mark Naik's centenary year. "We will hold an all India agricultural exposition in October in Nagpur. Naik believed agriculture was the key to the state's development. All the universities that offer courses in agriculture or have it as a subject will be instructed to include his achievements in this field in the curriculum," Moghe said.

"The state home ministry has sent a proposal to rename Vidarbha Express as Vasantrao Naik Vidarbha Express. We hope the proposal is cleared in the centenary year," Moghe said. The Marathwada agriculture university will be named after Naik. The government will also release a postage stamp in his honour.

District collector Saurabh Rao, who accompanied Moghe, said the crop situation in the district was excellent. "The June 1 to June 15 period received 92% of normal rains. State government has sanctioned additional Rs 75 crore to district central cooperative bank for agricultural loans. Farm credit should not be a problem," he stressed.
