The Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), Thailand today launched a new project using intelligent technology to manage and improve traffic system.
The project called “Smart Thailand via Intelligent Transport System Empowered by MOST’ was announced by MOST Minister Worawat Uea-apinyakul, and representatives from the Thai Traffic Police and the Department of Land Transport.
Uea-apinyakul said that current technology helps facilitate better traffic and reduce cost. “Many intelligent transport systems (ITS) effectively solve traffic problems, reduce accidents, and help preserve the environment in several countries.”
Under the ITS system, all cars will be installed with censor that would transmit real-time data of their locations to the control centre at Ministry of Transport for analytics process combining data from CCTV in Bangkok. The data will then be interpreted and sent to traffic police and to commuters in the form of reports via navigator devices in the cars or a mobile app, according to him.
Commuters will be able to know the most congested area and which area they should avoid. This will help them plan their journey more efficiently, he added.
According to him, the ministry is planning to adopt the ITS and collaborate works with related agencies. The installing of the system is expected to begin within six months starting in Bangkok, and the entire system will be fully implemented before 2015.
