An online poll has found 71 per cent of Australians are satisfied with their current job.

IT would appear that for many Australians changing jobs was not part of their New Year resolutions.

The weekly Essential Research online poll found that 71 per cent of respondents were satisfied with their current job, with only four per cent saying they were "very dissatisfied".

The survey released on Monday found women (77 per cent) were more satisfied than men (67 per cent) with their employment, while those on an income of $31,200 to $51,999 were least satisfied with their job (58 per cent).

Asked if they had a choice to change, 40 per cent of the 1007 survey respondents said they would prefer to stay in their current occupation with their current employer.

Thirty per cent would work in a different occupation if they had a choice, while 18 per cent would stay in the same occupation but with a different employer.

Asked which industry they trusted most to act in the public interest, respondents picked agriculture (72 per cent), followed by tourism (68 per cent) and manufacturing (56 per cent).

Least trusted to act in the public interest were power companies (18 per cent), media (30 per cent), mining (32 per cent) and banking (33 per cent).

Separately, 52 per cent did not believe religious organisations should be allowed to refuse to hire people who didn't live according to its beliefs, while 34 per cent said they should be able to.
