The city governments of Cebu and Tarlac took first places in Philippines’ inaugural ‘Honourable Jesse Robredo Awards for Excellence for ICT in Good Governance’, also known as ‘eGov Awards for Local Government Units (LGUs)’ last week.

Named after the late Jesse Robredo, head of the Department of the Interior and Local Government, the awards are presented by the National ICT Federation of the Philippines, the national organisation of ICT Councils promoting collaboration and sharing of best practices in ICT.

The awards seek to recognise and felicitate good governance through the use of modern ICT in LGUs in the Philippines. This inaugural session of the awards received 58 entries from local governments around the country.

The city government of Cebu won first place in the category of G2B (Government to Business), which awards laudable use of ICT solutions to enhance transparency, accountability and responsiveness to the needs of business enterprises.

The second place in the same category was given to the city government of Balanga for a combination of 20 in-house application systems that streamline city government services such as tax and rent payments by vendors.

The first place in the G2C (Government to Customer) category was awarded to the provincial government of Tarlac for its electronic health project, ‘Wireless Access for Health’ (WAH), which enables reliable health data transmission through the application of advanced 3G wireless technology.

The G2C category recognises effective application of ICT solutions in the education and engagement of the public in the use of electronic channels for improved public services. The second place in this category was given to the government of Naga City.
