Speaking during the inauguration ceremony of the “IT Legislation in the Maldives” seminar in Bandos Island Resort, Police Commissioner said while only 15 cases of cybercrime were reported in 2010, the figure rose by 200 percent to 41 cases in 2011. So far this year 61 cases have been reported, which is a matter of great concern, he added.

“Though such crimes have been on the rise, so far there isn't any way to regulate it through a cybercrime law. Some of our neighboring countries have enacted special cybercrime laws and have already enforced them,” Riyaz said.

In the ceremony attended by Defence Minister Mohamed Nazim and Home Minister Dr Mohamed Jameel Ahmed, Riyaz stressed on the importance of a cybercrime law in the Maldives, but assured that the Police are continuing efforts to combat such crimes in the absence of a law. On that note, he added that a special cybercrime policing department has been created to investigate cybercrime.

The seminar conducted jointly by the National Centre for Information Technology (NCIT), Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) and the Police, would hold discussions with officials of the judiciary on the draft IT Bill, according to NCIT.
