The Seoul Metropolitan Government will fix the current wage system of taxi drivers to improve their working conditions.
At present, cabbies hand over around 100-thousand won of their earnings a day to their companies and take the rest as their income.
The Seoul government will replace the current wage system with a new system from January in which drivers submit all their profits to the cab firms and receive a monthly salary.
This way, even if drivers don't make money every day, their monthly revenue will increase as high as twofold from their current monthly income of a little over one-million won.
Drivers will also enjoy greater welfare benefits, including the four major social insurance plans and retirement pay.
Seoul is the first local government in the country to completely abolish the existing wage scheme. Officials will closely oversee the transition and take disciplinary action against cab companies that do not submit accurate data on their earnings.
Seoul will also draft more measures to improve cabbies' working conditions including adjusting the taxi fare by analyzing data collected by digital navigation recorders.
