Anchor: Prime Minister Kim Hwang-sik announced measures to control energy supply and demand on Friday, predicting a severe energy crisis this winter. He also called on South Korean citizens to make energy preservation measures. Jang Souie has this report.
Report: Prime Minister Kim Hwang-sik held a press conference at the central government complex in Seoul on Friday, where he said that he will try his best to have operations resume at suspended nuclear reactors as soon as possible. Kim added he will shorten the construction period of new nuclear power plants and utilize private generators.

The prime minister also said that he will mandate electricity-guzzling companies to reduce energy use by as much as ten percent in January and February, when energy demand is expected to peak.

Kim continued that starting in January, he will adopt a so-called selective peak system by charging extra fees on selected days and hours to be announced a day ahead of time. He added that discount charges will be applied at other times.

As part of nationwide energy preservation efforts, public organizations will have to keep the temperature at 18 degrees Celsius or below, and private heaters will be banned. Public servants will be allowed to wear warm clothes regardless of formalities.

Prime Minister Kim also said he will obligate department stores and hotels to keep temperatures no higher than 20 degree Celsius. He also urged shopping centers to keep their doors closed and the public to wear extra layers of clothes at home and keep indoor temperatures low.

This is the second time Kim has held a meeting on energy supply and demand since May.
