Environment and Forests Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud on Monday said climate change has stood in the way of Bangladesh’s march forward towards emerging a middle-income country.
“Climate change is a big barrier towards emerging as a middle-income country for Bangladesh….the climate change catastrophe will not only affect a particular party, it’ll also devastate the whole world. To solve the problem, we should work together,” said Hasan Mahmud.
He came up with the remark at a seminar organised by Equitybd at the National Press club in the city.
“Bangladesh’s GDP growth would have been 1 percent higher had there been no climate change problem in the country,” he observed.
Hasan Mahmud said the government has expanded the social safety net programme across the country so that the marginal people could lead a better life. ”The government has expanded the social safety net programme up to ward level. Poverty is now reducing by 2-2.5 percent every year.”
He also claimed that the per capita income in Bangladesh has risen to US$850 dollar from US$600 in the past. “It took 15 years to raise the per capita income to 600 dollars from 300 dollars, but we added 250 dollars only in four years.”
Hasan Mahmud said Bangladesh, among the LDCs, has been playing an important role in dealing with the climate change issues. “The United Nation recognises our contributions and has co-opted Bangladesh in five climate change committees.”
