The Australian Department of Defence is modernising its Terrestrial Communications Services under moves to make better use of internet, wireless, and video-conferencing technologies.
This Terrestrial Communications Services’ upgrade, just announced by the Department of Defence, will streamlines command-and-control operations, as well as business activities.
It also improves data exchange between Australian allies and government agencies.
The upgrade, when fully operational, will enable Defence users to connect to agency-wide networks at any time, including through wireless technologies that use both Defence and personal devices.
This roll-out significantly improves Defence’s network performance – while meeting communications capability requirements to 2023, according to a Defence official statement.
Among its features, this upgrade will support desktop-to-desktop video conferencing for collaboration on the Defence Restricted Network and Defence Secret Network.
Additionally, this initiative delivers a single network that will connect to fixed and deployed locations. The network and communications platform is being supported by a single set of standards and products.
Modernised Terrestrial Communications Services will deliver “greater business efficiencies” while lowering the cost of running Information and Communication Technology (ICT) infrastructure.
Australian telco carrier, Telstra has been nominated as the “preferred tenderer” for Defence’s Terrestrial Communications Services’ upgrade.
Defence plans to enter into “further negotiations” with Telstra to finalise the contract, “subject to final government approval” by December 2012. Earlier contenders for this contract included Optus and Fujitsu.
