SINGAPORE, Oct. 27 (Xinhua) -- Singapore's authorities are reviewing tougher guidelines for advertisements of unhealthy food and beverage like fast food and soda, aiming at protecting children from being drawn to a diet that is high in fat, sugar or salt.
The city-state's Health Minister Gan Kim Yong made that statement on Saturday, adding that a public consultation will be launched next month, local paper The Strait Times reported.
He said some studies have showed that advertisements in mass media do have an influence on young children's food choices, as well as their preference for purchase requests through their parents.
This trend is said inconsistent with the country's effort to encourage its citizens to lead a healthy lifestyle, typically for young children below the age of 12.
"The guidelines will also specify what are the food that will be classified as undesirable, basically will look at the content of each food. We are not targeting at specific brands but looking at the food stuff and studying the content." he added.
According to the report by The Strait Times, Norway, Sweden, and some other countries have already have some respective regulations in this area, which the city-state is planning to do the same.
