Kazakhstan: Crime Rate Increases

A reported crime rate increased by 52.5 percent in Kazakhstan in the first 9 month of 2012 compared to the same period of 2011, the Committee on Legal Statistics and Special Accounts of the Kazakh State Office under the Public Prosecutor's Office reported on Monday. Around 210,133 crimes were registered in this period (compared to 137,789 crimes in January-September 2011), including 22,561 heinous crimes (compared to 20,419 heinous crimes in January-September 2011). The number of general crimes in Kazakhstan increased by 54.9 percent to 196,696 in the reporting period. The number of theft cases increased by 66.2 percent to 131,713, hooliganism by 93.8 percent to 12,218, fraud by 57 percent to 15,580, robbery by 25.2 percent to 15,196. Around 1.1 percent of all crimes fall to especially heinous crimes, 10.7 percent on heinous crimes, 79.9 percent on moderate crimes and 8.2 percent on insignificant crimes. A crime rate increased in all regions of the country, except transporting regions (0.1 decrease in these regions). Meanwhile, especially heinous crime number decreased in the reporting period by 14.4 percent, including 10.9 percent decrease in murder number.
