IPOH: The government is discussing with the Public Service Department the possibility of increasing the salary of civil servants who enter as graduates.

Chief Secretary to the Government Datuk Seri Dr Ali Hamsa said as the country inches towards high-income nation status in 2020, the income of civil servants should grow in tandem.

"We are at the early stages of discussions and looking into all possibilities," he said
Speaking after closing the Civil Services Commission conference, Ali said among the aspects that were being looked into was the promotion mechanism.

"Like in the teaching service, we have introduced time-based promotion," he said, admitting that the approval of the scheme would depend on government coffers.

On another matter, Ali said there was no such thing as a bloated civil service as claimed by Pakatan Rakyat.

"We are at the right size right now."

Earlier, he urged civil servants to work with the rakyat in mind.

"There are 1.42 million civil servants in the country and seven to eight million of the population are related to civil servants.

"When we work, do not just do it for the salary but work with the intention of fulfilling the people's wishes."

Ali said it should be ingrained in civil servants that they were not working just for themselves but also for the people.

"When we have that spirit, we will give our best."
