The Nenasala has been established within the newly-established library of the CRD, where it will serve not only the police officers, but also all the staff and their families, including children. It is the first Nenasala to be established for the exclusive usage of Police staff.

The Senior Deputy Inspector General Gamini Navaratne, speaking at the inauguration ceremony, commented that society, in order to renew itself, “could not move forward without the knowledge to keep up with the modern times.”

President Mahinda Rajapaksa reiterated this philosophy by saying that the purpose of the Nenasala projects was to bring ICT to “take all the dividends of ICT to every village and every citizen.”

According to the ICTA, the Nenasalas provide “a range of services including high speed internet access to national as well as local and international information, e-mail, telephone, computer training classes and other ICT related services.” It provides particularly relevant information for the rural community including updates on agriculture, fisheries, trade, and medicine.

The Nenasalas are part of the National Development Projects that have been initiated by the President Rajapaksa and implemented by ICTA. Currently, there are 667 Nenasalas within the country, catering to the rural community for training, internet provision and communication. Through ICT empowerment, the country intends to expedite poverty reduction, social and economic development and peace building, especially within the rural communities.
