The Secretary-General of ASEAN, Dr. Surin Pitsuwan, extended his congratulation to H.E. Sergei Martynov, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belarus upon the official inauguration of the new Embassy in Jakarta. The embassy would serve as a contact point for future cooperation between ASEAN and Belarus.

The meeting, held at the ASEAN Secretariat, was one of the agendas of the Minister's official visit to the Republic of Indonesia. During the meeting, Dr. Surin also expressed appreciation to Belarus for its efforts and proposals for practical cooperation with ASEAN, particularly on combating trafficking in persons.

H.E. Martynov stated that Belarus would like to engage in closer cooperation with ASEAN through bilateral, regional and multilateral frameworks. He said Belarus also sought the opportunity to deepen its relationship with ASEAN through the accreditation of its Ambassador to ASEAN. The decision to establish the Belarus' new Embassy in Jakarta also took into account the location of the ASEAN's headquarters to pursue closer relations to the Organisation and its Member States.

During the discussion, both sides explored possible areas of mutual interest to promote practical cooperation, including trade, agriculture, food security, energy, education, human resource development, and people-to-people exchange.
