Japan: New Laws to Facilitate More Police Autopsies

The House of Councillors at its plenary meeting Friday passed two bills aimed at facilitating police probes into causes of death.

The legislation will allow autopsies to be performed without bereaved families' consent, given the possibility that family members may be murder suspects.

One law stipulates the basic principles for conducting investigations into causes of death and the other spells out specific procedures and measures.

In a related move, the upper house's Cabinet Committee adopted a resolution calling on police to respond to requests by bereaved persons for explanations about causes of death and presentation of related documents.
