A local political commentator is appealing to the Solomon Islands Government to prioritise the need to establish an Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC). Dr John Roughan said some politicians would not accept such commission to establish because it will expose their corrupt practises. “This is good for Solomon Islands because since the country gain its political Independence corruption has plagued this nation.” “If national leaders are concern to serve the national interest they must agree to establish the ICAC now.” “Combating corruption is important to ensure people really benefit from their land and sea resources.” He said impacts of corruption on the socio-political and economic development of the country have resulted in the reduction of quality and quantity of goods and services available to the public. “Corruption impacts negatively on government expenditure”, because corrupt government officials would shift government expenditures to areas in which they could collect bribes. “They easily or manipulate the system thus breaking the government financial regulation or instruction,” he said. He added unfortunately, this makes large and hard-to-manage projects, such as airports or highways or ‘large, high-cost capital intensive projects’ easy prey to frauds thereby exposing some segments of the population to poverty.’ Corruption has taught the SI society a wrong lesson that it does not pay to be honest, hardworking and law-abiding. “This is because through corrupt means many political office holders have acquired wealth and properties in and outside.”
