The government has begun a project to develop a geostationary weather and environment-monitoring satellite.

The Ministry of Environment announced a plan to select a foreign codeveloper before the end of this year and build the mainframe of the satellite and a ground station by 2015. It aims to put the geostationary satellite into orbit in 2018.

The satellite will monitor changes in the levels of pollutants like ozone and sulfur dioxide during the daytime. It will be in use for ten years.

The ministry said it is the world’s first geostationary atmosphere-monitoring satellite, as only low-orbit satellites were developed for this purpose in the U.S. and Europe.
