Australian Attorney-General Nicola Roxon has signed a Joint Statement of Cybersecurity Intent with her counterpart, the Secretary of the US Department of Homeland Security, Janet Napolitano. The statement of intent lays the groundwork for increased information sharing on operation cybersecurity issues between national cyber incident response teams, the exchange of cybersecurity best practices for information technology and industrial control devices and will create opportunities for training, education and cyber exercises. Speaking about the agreement, Nicola Roxon explained, “Countries everywhere are increasingly reliant on critical infrastructure such as telecommunications, which enables ‘online’ activities that contribute to global commerce and trade and play an increasingly important role in national security. Both Australia and United States recognise the considerable benefits delivered by these activities, but also the challenges of managing cyber security and resilience to counter malicious activity.”

Australia has been a participating member of US Department of Homeland Security’s biennial cybersecurity exercise, Cyber Storm, since 2006, which works to strengthen cyber preparedness in the public and private sectors. Officials will next meet to develop a new work program for enhance bilateral cybersecurity cooperation. This agreement follows four other joint statements signed on 4 May 2012, to increase intelligence sharing and to make travel easier between the two countries. “Our partnership with Australia is growing deeper and stronger, as evidenced by the security-related statements,” said Secretary Napolitano. “By enhancing collaboration between our two countries, we will continue to work together to develop a cooperative and global approach to the challenges and threats we all face.”
