PNG: Calls for Response to Public Service Corruption Findings

Transparency International Papua New Guinea says it hopes the government that is elected at next month's elections will act on the findings of a damning report on corruption in the public service.

The present government has set up a temporary group, Taskforce Sweep to tackle corruption and since last August, 35 people including the former Planning Minister, Paul Tiensten have been arrested.

The Prime Minister, Peter O'Neill says he wants the body to become permanent.

Chairman of Transparency International Papua New Guinea, Lawrence Stephens has told Pacific Beat it is important action is taken against those involved in corruption.

"We welcome the fact that there is a report and we do know that the implementation of the findings of the report, subsequent investigations and so on will take a long time, he said.

"It will probably end up in the hands of a new government,

"That is one of the great problems we face in Papua New Guinea, in that it doesn't appear to matter which government the results of the report end up with, no further action is taken."

Mr Stephens says the results of the report needs to be attended to and a resolution to its findings made.

"What I think most of the seven million people in Papua New Guinea hope fo, is that by some miracle the coming election will return people with the integrity required to follow up on reports such as this."
